LaChaston Smith(6'1/216) of South Iredell High School in Statesville, N.C. has started to receive some major attention on the recruiting trial. The junior linebacker prospect reeled in his first two offers last week and more appear to be on the way.

"I received an offer Virginia on Tuesday and I received an offer from Florida on Wednesday," said Smith. "I am also hearing from Clemson, Alabama, Tennessee, East Carolina, Michigan, Maryland, South Carolina, and North Carolina State.

Coaches from Virginia, Florida, East Carolina, and N.C. State have been by South Iredell to check on Smith. After picking his first two offers last week, he thinks a few other schools will be extending scholarship offers in the near future.

"I think my next offer will be from East Carolina," Smith said. "If not East Carolina, then I think Clemson or N.C. State will be the next offer."

One coach has really impression on the South Iredell product.

"I call Coach Durkin at Florida every now and then," he said. "We have talked about me going to junior day and the spring game. He treats me like I am already on their football team."

Smith knows his strengths, but also knows where he needs to improve.

"I am pretty good tackler, "he said. "Once I get my hands on someone, they are going to the ground one way or another. I need to work on attacking the play quicker. I have the speed in high school to wait a second, attack the play and still make the play, but in college the game is much faster."

The Vikings junior already knows what will be important, when the time comes for him to make his college decision.

"The school needs to have a good reputation, and it also needs to have a good graduation rate," he said.

Smith will start visiting schools soon and already knows two trips he will make.

"I know for sure I am going to Virginia and Florida; since those were the first schools to offer me," he said. "I also plan on visiting N.C. State and East Carolina."

Smith already has put together a timeline for his decision.

"I will probably narrow my list of schools down in October, because I plan to commit on October 13," Smith said. "That will be the middle of my season, and that is when I think I will be in my prime. I will make decision that night after our game."

As a sophomore, Smith had 99 tackles, 24 for loss, seven sacks, seven forced fumbles. He was also named the Catawba Valley Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Year. In only 10 games this past season, he had 82 tackles, 24 for loss, three sacks, seven forced fumbles, and two interceptions. Smith bench presses 315 pounds, squats 465, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds.

Update: Smith picked up an offer from Wake Forest this morning.
