Havelock (N.C.) High School continues to produce top-flight college football prospects. On Thursday…
Vickers ready to become a Gamecock
He was just waiting on that phone call.
The call came on Wednesday as Vickers received word from South Carolina defensive line coach Brad Lawing that he had an official offer from the Gamecocks.
It didn't take long for Vickers to think about his decision as he already knew this was where he wanted to be and it meant a lot to the 6-foot-4, 240-pound player from Havelock High School in North Carolina.
"It meant a lot especially since it was from USC. That's where i really wanted to go and for them to call and say they wanted me meant a lot."
There were a lot of factors that led Vickers to decide on the Gamecocks. The recent success on the football field, including this year's 8-2 team, along with the chance to play with former and current teammates were too much to pass according to Vickers.
"South Carolina is in the SEC and my best friend Pharoh(Cooper) is also going there. It's an amazing place to play college football and I wanted to be a part of that."
Vickers mentions Pharoh Cooper, a 2013 commitment for the Gamecocks, as a major reason for him wanting to play with the Gamecocks. It's understandable as Vickers and Cooper have been friends for years.
"Pharoh has been my best friend for a while now. I've known him since kindergarten and we've just been friends ever since."
The phone call today from Coach Lawing today was the icing on the cake for Vickers. He recounts that the initial interest in him as a player was during a camp he took part in during a trip to Columbia over the summer.
"Coach Lawing called and I talked to him. I also went to a camp in South Carolina and saw some of the coaches there. I also think that's when they really started looking at me."
Vickers is currently playing linebacker for his Havelock and has eight sacks this season with a forced fumble.
The Gamecocks are recruiting Vickers as a defensive lineman but he knows his talents on the field. He's quick, clocked as low as 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, and feels like he can do it all on defense.
""I think with my athleticism they can do a lot with me. They said they want me for d-line. I can do a lot. I can rush the passer, clog up gaps and stop the run. I can run very well. I've been clocked at a 4.5 so I'm able to run down stuff backside."
There is a question of when Vickers may be able to enroll at South Carolina. While he will be a part of the 2013 class, the chance that he'll have to be a placement at prep school is an option. The under-the-radar prospect understands that and is okay with that if it's the route he has to take.
"If I qualify then I think I'm going to go there after I graduate, but if i don't I'm going to Fork Union for a semester."
Ultimately, the Gamecocks are getting a football player according to Vickers. He's determined to bring it all on the field when he gets to South Carolina.
"I'm a football player that plays with something to prove every time I'm on the field and I plan on doing that when I go to USC."
Vickers plans to commit to Coach Lawing and the Gamecocks sometime on Thursday. He's currently unranked on the Scout.com network and will be the Gamecocks' 22nd commitment in the 2013 class.
