In-State OL Slims Down

MOORESVILLE, N.C. --- In an attempt to appeal more to recruiters, Schuyler Coleman made a major change in his lifestyle.

"A lot of colleges told me that they like me but I just have to lose a lot of weight," Coleman said. "So my dad and I, both of us wanted to get on a diet, so we did it like a father-son sort of thing. I'm doing a spinach diet that my brother did with his girlfriend. It's working well. In the first three weeks, I dropped 15 pounds."

In the beginning of the summer, Coleman tipped the scales at 360 pounds. Now the Davidson (N.C.) Day offensive lineman holds 335 pounds on his 6-foot-6 frame.

The weight loss has contributed to Coleman garnering scholarship offers from FCS schools Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina, as well as increased interest from North Carolina and NC State.

With UNC in particular, Coleman has regular conversations with assistant coaches Blake Anderson and Chris Kapilovic.

"We're just talking man-to-man," Coleman said. "They just said they're looking at me and I'm just playing my hardest to get an offer."

Coleman has camped at UNC and attended its thrilling 43-35 defeat of NC State.

"I haven't been to too many college games – this was my first year going to college games in general," Coleman said. "Going there and seeing the crowd and seeing them just go after [Gio Bernard's game-winning] punt return. It was something that was new to me and exciting to me to watch."

Coleman has also made recent visits to Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina.

With a chance that FBS schools jump into the mix with an offer, Coleman is hesitant to name favorites at this point.

"I want to keep checking out the schools and see if they have what I'm looking for academic wise," Coleman said. "I want to go on my official visits and see what I like."

Coleman's senior season ended last Friday with a second consecutive NCISAA Title. His play earned him a spot in the Oasis All-Star Shrine Game this Saturday at Mooresville (N.C.) High School. In the game, which has a 1pm kickoff, Coleman will start at left tackle for the North Carolina squad.
