Johnson Newest Duck Walk-On

(Matthews, NC) WR Jonathan Johnson

Oregon continued a string of success on the recruiting front on Monday night as Jireh Prep (Matthews, NC) WR Jonathan Johnson accepted a position as a preferred walk-on.

Johnson was entertaining similar offers from Wisconsin and Colorado State, as well as offers from some FCS schools. But, that all changed when Oregon contacted him.

"Last week I was contacted by Matthew Noyer for a preferred walk-on spot with the University of Oregon," Johnson said. "I spoke it over with my mom and a couple of my recruiting coaches and they told me to go ahead and take it."

"Oregon has always been a dream school of mine," Johnson said. "I've been watching them for a long time. Over the years it's been a little basic interest. I just kept sending them film whenever I'd get an update, a new 40 time or something like that."

Johnson said that the entire process took only an hour.

"I thought it was a joke at first. I didn't see Noyer on the football staff but he works in the athletic office and he got back to me within an hour. He told me to go ahead and apply to the school and everything so that we can get the ball rolling."

Johnson said that Oregon wants him playing in the slot position and he plans on learning as much as he can from the players already in the program, specifically De'Anthony Thomas.

"He's probably going to be one of the best players in the country this upcoming year, so it's going to be a learning experience," Johnson said. "But, my trainer and my personal developer will make sure I'm not the weakest link when I head into camp."

Johnson is no stranger to some associated with the program. He's remained in regular contact with fellow wide receiver and verbal commit Darren Carrington, whom he credited with passing along his information to the Oregon staff, and is friends with current Ducks wide receiver Bralon Addison, who has been sharing his advice with Johnson.

"He's telling me to work hard, do what I'm supposed to do," Johnson said. "It's about focus, the results will come."

Johnson is also close with Ducks target and former Jireh teammate and WR Christian Cumberland.

"He's taught me everything I know about the slot position," Johnson said. "That's why I'm so confident going in because he taught me a lot of things."

Johnson anticipates getting to know the coaching staff soon, but said he is excited to work with Lubick and can't wait to get to Eugene.

"I'm trying to enroll in summer school," Johnson said. "I'm trying to get down there for summer camp. I need to be there as soon as possible." Jonathan Johnson profile
