Boyette Leading the Golden Demons

With the leadership of Duke commit Re'quan Boyette, a senior RB/DB, it’s no wonder Fike High School has earned a number one seed in the 3A bracket of the NCHSAA playoffs.

As talented an athlete as Boyette is - a three-star prospect who has amassed almost 2,000 rushing yards on the year - you’d be hard pressed to get that out of him.

“My goal was to get 1500 yards and 20 touchdowns, but that came second to my team’s goals,” Re'quan Boyette, the Shrine Bowl pick said. “They have helped me get where I am. I never really set the Shrine Bowl as a goal, but it’s because of my team and their success that I got picked. I’m pretty excited about it.”

The Golden Demons have taken a “baby-step” approach to the season, finishing small goals first, which will in turn bring them to the ultimate prize.

“Basically, our team goals are to win county, conference and state championships,” explained Boyette. “So far we have gotten two out of three, because we won both of them in last Friday night’s game.”

In true Boyette fashion, the 5-foot-10, 185-pounder puts the team’s success firmly on the shoulders of the Fike football coaching staff, whose preparation - as well as the players’ hard work – has resulted in a 10-1 record (4-0 in conference).

“We have worked so hard this year, but our coaches have really done a great job,” remarked Boyette. “They work hard all week long watching film and getting our offense and defense ready to face our opponent, and then we go out and practice hard. It’s no accident we are where we are. We put in the work.”

Number one seeded Fike takes on the number sixteen seed, Bertie High School this Friday. The match-up should be the first step to Fike’s long run in the play-offs, and if Boyette has anything to say about it, it will be the team’s first step toward a state championship title.

“Right now we are just looking forward to playing for the next five weeks.”

If Fike achieves the goal of representing the East in the State Championship game, it won’t be the first time the Golden Demons have been there. Two years ago, Fike lost to a stronger and faster Winston-Salem Carver team 34-0. Boyette was just a sophomore that year.
