BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- Polk County High will host the second annual Border Showcase Football Classic Saturday night at Spangler Stadium at 6 PM on the campus of Gardner – Webb University. The Classic will feature some of the top talent in the Carolinas as well as some intriguing match ups.

Coach Bruce Ollis of Polk County High came up with idea for this jamboree last year and it was a huge success. Coach Ollis said " we feel that this will be one of the premier football jamborees in the South pitting some of the top programs in North and South Carolina against each other."

Last years Showcase attracted over 10,000 fans. The teams from South Carolina won all four quarters by a combined score of 86 – 20. The big match up of the night saw nationally ranked Byrnes out score nationally ranked Independence 24 – 14.

Tickets for the event are $10 at the gate.

The match ups this year are Pisgah vs Landrum, Shelby vs Dorman, Host Polk County vs Broome and in the final match up of the night is Crest vs Gaffney.

Pisgah vs Landrum – This half of football features two of the better Quarterbacks in the Carolinas. Pisgah's Zach Jaynes (6", 190 lbs, 4.6) threw for over 2100 yards and 15 tds in 05 to lead the Bears to a 9-3 record. The Bears return 10 starters on offense and are led by an offensive line some colleges would like to have. The line is anchored by Andrew Young (6'2", 300 lbs), Edward Roger (6'2", 270 lbs) and Rusty Dayten (6', 255 lbs). Running behind the line is returning 1000-yard rusher Joey Eggleston (1094 yds, 18 tds). The defense returns only four starters so it must mature quickly.

Four starter at Quarterback Mark Cann leads the Cardinal. Cann, who is the 42nd rated senior by the High School Sports Report, threw for over 2100 yards and 13 tds in 05. Chris Gray (6'4", 240 lbs) leads the offensive line and running behind that line is Garrison McDowell (1255 yds, 17 tds). Defensively, Linebacker Zeke Rollins and Free Safety Zach Hyder lead a unit that returns 8 starters from 05.

Shelby vs Dorman – The Golden Lions of Shelby are coming off a state championship in 05 after a runner-up finish in 04. Quarterback Darryl Montgomery (5'11", 180 lbs, 4.7) is very athletic and knows how to win (very underrated). Bruising Fullback Arsenio Parks (5'11", 230 lbs, 4.7) who rushed for over 1100 yards and 18 tds last season returns to give Shelby a good one- two punch. Defensive End Travis Little (6'3", 253 lbs), Parks and Defensive Back Calvin Brown (5'10", 160 lbs) are the leaders of a veteran defense.

Dorman is ranked 9th in 4A by the High School Sports Report returns 6 starters on both sides of the football. The Cavaliers will look to senior Tight End Andrew Lanier (6'4", 225 lbs, 4.7) and senior Running Back/ Defensive Back Lamont Cartledge (5'11", 200 lbs) for leadership. Both players are ranked in HSSR top 110 players. Jacob Robinson is one of the better kickers in the state.

Polk County vs Broome – The host Wolverines went 8-4 last season and have higher expectations in 06. Austin Ollis(5'9", 165 lbs, 4.5) steps in at Quarterback for Polk County. Junior Tailback Justin Simpson and senior Lineman Seth Cantrell are two of sevens returning starters on offense. The Wolverines also return seven starters on defense and look for senior Defensive End Marcus Robinson to have a big year.

Heath Hembree (6'4", 180 lbs) and Markich Jones (6', 183 lbs, 4.4) are the only returning starters on offense for the Broome Centurions. However, both players are among the best in the state with Jones ranked 14th and Hembree 38th by the HSSR. Defensively, Broome is led by the 28th ranked player in the state Linebacker Antwane Glen (6'4", 245 lbs, 4.8). Senior Defensive Back Antino Thomas (6'3", 190 lbs) is one of four returning starters on defense.

Crest vs Gaffney – The Chargers of Crest finished 9 – 6 in 06 after two straight State Championships. The Chargers return 8 starters on offense and should be able to put points on the scoreboard. Wide Receivers Mario Washington (4.6) and Bruce Smith (4.4) provide speed on the outside and can stretch the field. Linebacker Duane Maddox (6'0", 222 lbs, 4.6) is one of the top five juniors in the state.

The Indians of Gaffney won their second state championship in last three years and look to make it two in a row with a talented returning group. Malcolm Long (6'3", 210 lbs) returns at Quarterback and looks to hook up with Wide Receiver Tyson Petty often in 06. Defensively the Indians will be tough to run on with Grayson Gentry (6', 260 lbs) and Lavar Ross (6'2", 280 lbs) on the line and Linebacker JB Shippy roaming behind them. Long (#40), Gentry (#67) and Ross (#83) are all ranked in the HSSR top 110.
