Sawyer Commits to ECU

Trevor Sawyer verbally committed to East Carolina Saturday.

"It was getting pretty late and I was just trying to pick a school early," Sawyer said. "East Carolina, they use the tight end a lot and they were the first to offer... I just felt like it was the place for me."

In addition to ECU, Sawyer, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound tight end from Asheville (N.C.), had received a scholarship offer from Marshall. He also was being recruited heavily by North Carolina and NC State.

"[UNC and NC State] never really offered and they were stringing it out like ‘let's see your new film,'" Sawyer said.

Last Friday, a couple of ECU coaches attended Sawyers' game. The following day, he made the verbal commitment.

"After [the ECU coaches] left, my coach and I talked a lot about where I was going," Sawyer said. "We decided that [ECU] would be the place for me."

The decision to commit nearly came out of the blue for Sawyer, who was waiting to see who else might offer a scholarship.

"I was thinking it about a little bit, but [committing] just hit me the one night," Sawyer said. "And then the next day I made the commit."

Sawyer says the commitment is firm – no matter who may offer in the future.

"I told them I gave them my word and they gave me their word that they're done with tight ends," Sawyer said. "They said if I would commit to them, then I'm the only tight end that they'll take this year – that was another big part about [my decision]. As long as they're sticking with me, I'm going to stick with them."

Sawyer transferred from Candler (N.C.) Enka prior to the season. On the year, he has recorded 17 receptions for 350 yards and five touchdowns. He also starts at defensive end for Asheville.
