The chants of “Norman, Norman” explained the theme of the 38th chapter of the storied rivalry between Richmond Senior and Scotland.

When the Fighting Scots got sick of having the junior tailback run it down their throats for a total of 192 yards on 29 carries, they crowded the box. This adjustment allowed for the Raiders to open up a semi-dormant passing attack, which highlighted Norman Whitley.

Whitley was responsible for three of the Raiders five touchdowns.

At first, this chapter didn’t seem to be headed in its eventual direction.

The game opened up with a solid 12-play drive orchestrated by division I-A prospect Cameron Sexton, who ended the night completing 22-of-35 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown. The drive resulted in a one-yard touchdown run by tailback Amad Robinson, and gave Scotland a 7-0 lead and momentum.

The momentum lived on shutting down Richmond’s offense on their first drive, and supplying the Fighting Scots with yet another solid drive, that end in a missed 44-yard field goal attempt.

However, Whitley came calling, stealing Scotland’s mojo basically for the rest of the night as he connected with quarterback Brent Smith on an 80-yard touchdown reception.

The offense’s emotion was transferred to the defense and the tables were officially turned. On Scotland’s first play after the Raiders touchdown, Sexton dropped back only to meet defensive tackle L.J. Ellerbe, who stripped the ball, while teammate Chris Crank recovered the fumble.

On the first play after the turnover, Whitley ran 26 yards for his 22nd touchdown of the year.

The trend continued: the Raider defense shutdown the Fighting Scots’ offense, and then the Richmond offense increased the lead. This time, Smith hit Nate Robinson for an 18-yard touchdown pass.

Just before the half ended, Richmond increased its lead to 28-7 when – guess who – caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Smith, who completed 4-of-6 passes for 127 yards and three touchdowns by the end of the game.

With the help of a few Richmond penalties, Scotland looked to be repeating its comeback feat of last year until Sexton threw an interception in his own redzone. The interception, which was picked off by Brandon Breeden, was returned 80 yards to pay dirt.

Sexton’s quick 66-yard touchdown pass to Dwight Douglas came too little, too late, but it took Sexton to throw his second interception of the night for the Fighting Scots to finally lose their fight.
